8 Cheap Fall Roof Checks Every Fort Washington Homeowner Should Do
By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC
In Fort Washington the roof's biggest enemy isn't age. It's the trees. Tantallon, Fort Foote and Silesia sit under heavy canopy, and every fall it lands on your roof. Eight checks, most of them free.
1. Clear the valleys
Leaves pack into valleys and hold water against the shingles.
2. Clean the gutters twice
Once when the leaves start, once when they're done.
3. Look for moss on the north side
Shade plus moisture equals moss, and moss lifts shingles.
4. Trim branches back
Limbs touching the roof scrape granules off every time the wind blows.
5. Check for dents and punctures
A fallen limb can crack a shingle you can't see from the ground.
6. Walk the attic after a storm
A flashlight and five minutes will show a leak before the ceiling does.
7. Check the downspouts
They should push water away from the house, not dump it at the foundation.
8. Get eyes on it every few years
A professional inspection catches what binoculars miss.
