Will DC pay to repair or replace my roof?

By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC

It can, if you own and live in the house and your income is within the limits. DC's Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) runs roof grants inside its Single Family Residential Rehabilitation Program, SFRRP for short. The grant pays to repair or replace a roof that is letting water in or has become structurally unsound, along with exterior roofing and gutter work.

What the grant pays

According to DHCD, the roof grant is up to $30,000. Paired with accessibility work, it can go up to $60,000, and total SFRRP help is capped at $75,000 per household.

It covers repair or replacement of a roof that is water damaged or structurally compromised, plus exterior roofing and gutter work. That is the information we had as of October 2026. DHCD decides who is eligible and how much any household gets.

Who qualifies

  • You own a home in DC in a building of four units or fewer
  • It has been your main residence for at least three years
  • Your homeowners insurance and your property taxes are current
  • Your mortgage has been current for the past 12 months
  • Your household income is within the program limits

How the money moves

DHCD sets the scope of the work, a licensed contractor does it, and DHCD pays. The homeowner does not pay the contractor directly for the covered work. Apply through DHCD, and ask them at the start how the contractor is chosen.

Where we fit

SFRRP does not list us as one of its contractors, and we cannot file your application or predict DHCD's answer. What we can do is come out, go up on the roof and photograph what failed, then send a written estimate with the scope itemized line by line. Having that in hand can help when you talk to DHCD about what the roof needs.

We hold a Washington, DC residential home improvement license and a DC contractor license. If the program lets you pick the contractor, or you decide to go ahead without the grant, we can do the work. A DC rowhouse roof is usually flat behind a parapet, and the leak is often nowhere near the stain, so we walk the whole roof before writing anything down.

Services this program can pay for

On this site, the grant lines up with roof repair, roof replacement, leak repair and the gutter and roof drainage work DHCD lists as exterior roofing.
